Physical theories can be grouped into three categories: mainstream theories, proposed theories and fringe theories. I've used all of that a lot more as a condensed matter theorist than I have Riemannian geometry. When I ask them what they mean by "theoretical physics", I often get a reply that to the effect that they want to study string theory, elementary particles, etc.. However, this could change with a new method for solid state quantum computers devised by physicists from Simple theory may explain dark matter. The fundamental question addressed is how one can reconcile string theory's failure in terms of conventional methodology of science with its continuing hold on at least part of the physics community. Physicists plan to create a “time crystal” — a theoretical object that moves in a repeating pattern without using energy — inside a device called an ion trap. If there had been no conscious efforts to get rid of the mythological viewpoint of the world and, its narrow-minded method of thinking, the theoretical physics in our country, too, would have followed a miserable path. This talk is part of a ongoing communist discussion (including Engels' Dialectics of Nature and Lenin's EmpirioCriticism) in which developments in science are approached in terms of whether they confirm existing theses of materialist dialectics — i.e. Methods of Theoretical Physics, Part I book download Download Methods of Theoretical Physics, Part I This two-volume set is truly a work of art. Testing the consequences of a theory is part of the scientific method. The response I get is of the type "I want to do theoretical physics". For example, there is no discussion of numerical techniques, optimization, graph theory, etc. For practical applications has proven to be very difficult.
